Packing List

Here is my recommended list of gear for your trip to Costa Rica. Please note, this is just a basic minimal guideline, feel free to bring anything else you want. If you have any questions or want clarification about what to bring please email me.

CLOTHING

  • Comfortable closed-toe light hiking shoes or regular sneakers.

  • 1 pair of sports sandals

  • 1 pair of beach sandals

  • 1-2 pair of long pants (fast-drying, lightweight, and breathable)

  • 2 pairs of shorts (fast-drying and breathable best)

  • Hat for sun and eye protection

  • Swimwear

  • Rashguard UV protected long or short sleeve shirt for ocean

  • 1 fleece or light sweater.

  • Waterproof rain jacket

  • Bandana (very handy for a sweat rag, sun protection on your neck, etc.)

  • Nice comfy chill pants

  • Waterproof dry box that hangs around your beck or clips (for taking valuables like keys and cards with you)

GEAR

  • Day back (e.g. a packsack or small hiking bag for day adventures)

  • Head lamp

  • Portable first-aid kit

  • Reusable Water bottle

  • Small towel

  • Sunglasses

  • Bag for dirty laundry

  • Sunblock (SPF 30 or higher recommended)

  • Insect protection (DEET-free)

  • Cell phone and travel plan: contact your provider about an international plan or roaming while out of the country or we can get you a roaming data plan when you arrive. Wifi will be available at all our overnight stays.

PERSONAL ITEMS

  • Pharmacies in Costa Rica are abundant and well-stocked so don’t worry if you forget anything but would recommend traveling with any personal medicine you might need. (Pepto, Tylenol, Advil etc.)

  • Personal toiletries (including dental, earplugs, etc.)

  • Keep a photocopy of your passport in your wallet or other safe location.

  • Health insurance plan that covers you while traveling in Costa Rica.

  • Passport (make sure it is valid for 6 or more months after you return).

MONEY

  • Money for incidentals and items of a personal nature. Banks and ATMs are numerous. Credit cards are accepted in most places. US dollars are accepted everywhere as long as they are in bills of $20 or less. US bills that are torn or marked are not accepted. Payment via phone is also common.

  • Tips: Tipping is an incredible way of showing your appreciation for exceptional service. While not expected, tips to local guides, restaurants, and experiences that provide a high level of service to your experience are welcome. Please read our tipping guide.
